Count-Adjusted Blackjack Strategy

While basic strategy is the foundation of perfect blackjack play, advanced players use card counting to gain an edge over the casino. This calculator incorporates the Hi-Lo counting system to adjust decisions based on the current composition of the deck.

True Count Explained

The Running Count tells you whether more high cards or low cards have been dealt. However, to make accurate decisions, you must convert this into a True Count. The True Count is calculated by dividing the Running Count by the number of decks remaining in the shoe.

True Count = Running Count / Decks Remaining

Blackjack Deviations

At certain True Count thresholds, it becomes mathematically optimal to "deviate" from basic strategy. These are known as strategy deviations or "index plays." For example, when the True Count is +3 or higher, it's often better to take insurance, even though basic strategy says never to do so.

Our calculator automatically applies these deviations when you are in "Count Adjusted" mode, showing you exactly when and why to change your play based on the count.
