Sports Betting Accumulator Explained — How Parlays Work & When to Use Them

What is an Accumulator (Parlay)?
An accumulator (or parlay) combines two or more individual bets into a single wager. All selections must win for the bet to pay out. If even one leg loses, the entire bet loses.
The appeal? Multiplied odds that create large payouts from small stakes. The risk? Exponentially increasing probability of losing.
How Accumulator Odds Work
The total odds are calculated by multiplying all individual selections:
$$Total\ Odds = Odds_1 \times Odds_2 \times Odds_3 \times ... \times Odds_n$$
Example: A 3-leg accumulator:

$$1.80 \times 2.00 \times 1.50 = 5.40$$
A $100 bet returns $540 if all three win. But the true probability is only 18.5% — meaning you'll lose about 4 out of 5 times.
The Math: Why Accumulators Favour the House
Each individual bet has a built-in house edge (also called "vig" or "juice"). For a standard -110/-110 spread bet:
$$House\ Edge \approx 4.5%$$
When you combine multiple bets, the house edge compounds:
$$Accumulator\ Edge = 1 - (1 - Edge)^n$$
For a 5-leg accumulator at 4.5% edge per leg:
$$Edge = 1 - (1 - 0.045)^5 = 1 - 0.794 = 20.6%$$
A 20.6% house edge is enormous. For comparison, American roulette has a 5.3% edge.
When Accumulators CAN Be Profitable
Accumulators are profitable only when every individual leg is +EV:
$$EV_{parlay} = \prod_{i=1}^{n} (1 + EV_i) - 1$$
Example: Three +EV bets, each with 5% edge:
$$EV_{parlay} = (1.05)^3 - 1 = 1.1576 - 1 = +15.76%$$
The key: you must be better at finding value than the bookmaker. If you can consistently identify +EV bets, parlays amplify your edge. If you can't, parlays amplify your losses.
Practical Tips
- Keep it to 2-3 legs. Each additional leg compounds the house edge exponentially.
- Never include correlated outcomes. If Team A wins, Team B is more likely to win — but bookmakers often don't let you parlay correlated bets for a reason.
